You've Got Tumblr!

Yep. I just did it. Literally finished it like ten minutes ago. And by "finished" I mean registered. There really isn't much up there yet.

What this is going to do is really highlight the social aspects of the HP universe and quick things that I find interesting. So it's going to be mostly pictures, some songs, some videos, a lot of what is here, minus the actual posts. So it's basically the multimedia part of this site.

Of course if you're already reading this, you really aren't missing out on anything! The first and foremost purpose of the tumblr is to promote this blog (just like with the Twitter and the YouTube), so being on this site means you're in good shape!!

I'm also a little quirkier on the tumblr, I try to keep my insanity on the DL here, because I feel like crazy people ruin the atmosphere, but there is gonna be more like how I would be if you met me in person.

Well, here's the link, go crazy!

Pottermore!!

Huzzah!!

Happy New Year! And for your holiday present, I give you a partial review of...

Pottermore!! Pooottttteeeerrrmmoooooorrreeee!!! Aka the wonderful addition to the Harry Potter Universe straight from the creator herself! Hip, hip hooray!!

Now for the very few of you who don't know, Pottermore is a VERY unique online experience created by J.K. Rowling and it's purpose is to enhance the reading of the books. Honestly, you don't even need the books to enjoy the website, but it is advised that you do read them at the same time. Don't have any idea what I mean by that? Don't worry, you soon will.

Right now the site is in Beta Mode, so only those with Beta access (like yours truly) can get into it at this time. For everyone who isn't a member, you're going to have to wait until they open it completely (they said it would be open in October, but obviously that didn't happen...). The point is, if you don't have an account now, you're going to have to rely on my very in-depth review to find out what this beauty of a site is all about.

So let's begin!

After you go through the painstakingly long registration process (which includes weeks of waiting for your acceptance e-mail -- I mean letter), and you have your username (you have to choose from a list) and password (you can obviously just make one), you are ready to rock. Here's the homepage:

So you sign in, and then you are taken to a web page that's red and has what looks like a swirly path on it. This path serves as your guide throughout the series, as it is broken up into seven parts, each representing --you guessed it -- a Harry Potter book. The books are individually split up into chapters, and it is through these chapters that you delve into the meat of Pottermore.
You can't skip ahead, you have to go chapter by chapter through the book. In each chapter, there are two or three "moments" which consist of beautifully illustrated scenes in the books. Honestly, some of these drawings took my breath away, here are some of my favorites:

Absolutely gorgeous! But that isn't even everything! Not even close!!

Hidden in each of these moments are objects that can be anything - from a galleon to a chocolate frog card to ingredients for potions you'll need to make later. You can collect these and keep them in your trunk and then use them for various activities. But even better than the hidden collectables are the hidden stories and facts that J.K. Rowling tucked in there. There are character biographies, stories about places throughout the series, and some insight given into many of the decisions that Rowling made when writing Harry Potter. It's fascinating and you will learn more than you ever thought you could. I now know everything there is to know about Professor McGonagall!

Sorry to end this so abruptly, but it's time for me to skidaddle. Just wanted to have something recent up there to keep the (two) people that check this for updates!!

Also, stay tuned, I'm coming up with a prize for a contest!! It's going to be a comment contest, because I WANT COMMEEENNNTSSSS!!

Thank you, goodnight and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Also...any questions comments concerns, the usual, please don't hesitate to email me! PhoenixSong7@gmail.com. And we will soon have a tumblr!! Details to come soon.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter Review (Part 1)

Okay, so I know that this park has been up and running and open to the public for more than a year now.

But I cannot tell you how many times I have run into Harry Potter fans who have yet to have been to Florida to see the glory that is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter! So, to all of you out there, this one is for you. And I suppose it's also for the ones who are wondering if it's even worth your time. Well let me help you out by starting this review out with this: IT IS MOST DEFINITELY WORTH YOUR TIME.

It's been a year since I visited the park, and let me tell you that I have yet to have had more fun or had a better experience than I did that week that I was in Florida, and those two days (which were not even enough to satisfy my love) that I spent with my eyes locked on Hogwarts Castle. Let's star with the entrance.

So you walk in (after worming your way through the entire park, clearly they have a good Universal Studios marketing person on their team), and you see the lovely gates. As soon as you step through them....BAM. Instant wow factor (Tim Gunn, anyone?). Hogsmeade (which is combined with Diagon Alley, which is annoying at first but then you see it and it isn't such a big deal, plus it's understandable) is bloody brilliant. There are a bunch of little shops that look like they were plucked straight from JK Rowling's imagination. They have (fake) snow topped houses, which would be really cute if it ever snowed it Florida. But whatever, I do always picture Hogsmeade in the snow for some reason.

And then, barely after you get over the fact of how badass Hogsmeade is, you walk up the street and...well...basically, you see heaven......HOGWARTS CASTLE. I have no words. All I can tell you is that I teared up. Ohhh yeah. I know this post opened with a picture of it (had to lure you folks in somehow :] ) but here is another one just for kicks. And because I can't stop looking at it.

Ooooooo it still gives me the shivers. So now that you've read me basically have a spasm at my computer, you know that I love it and you're probably thinking, can we hear more about the details of the park now? FINE. (I'll have more time to rant about the glory of this Hogwarts Castle later).

So there are basically three more parts to this review, and depending on how long I can stay awake, two of the parts might come up tomorrow (plus I've got so much homework.....the life of a college student is so stressful not even the wonderful tones of Hedwig's Theme can calm me down...). So anyway. The three parts are as follows: the rides, the shops, and the atmosphere. I'm including restaurants and bars under "shops".

So let's start off with the rides. Yes, I'm including the one inside Hogwarts as a "ride" even though some people are calling it more of an "experience". Well, for all intents and purposes, it's a ride. And don't you hate it when people say "for all intensive purposes"? Not how the saying goes, folks.

So the first ride is called Flight of the Hippogriff. Now this one is for little children and people who don't like roller coasters. It's a kiddy coaster, meaning that it doesn't go upside down or anything, the speed is nice and slow, and you only need a lap belt to keep you safe. That's really all there is to it, there isn't much more to add except that at one point a nice robotic Buckbeak picks up his head and says hi to y'alls. And by "says hi" I mean looks at you.

Random side note, I don't know how many of you are fans of the actor Michael Douglas, but here's a picture of him and his wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones!) and (cutie) kids on the ride.

So the next ride was more up my alley, as I'm more of a fast flying coaster girl: Dragon Challenge. It is similar to Flight of the Hippogriff in that it is basically a ride you see all around the park, but it has a different name. The cool thing about it is that it's actually TWO roller coasters, and they intertwine so when you're passing the other track it's kind of upped the scare factor a smidge. I think the two coasters are different but I'm not sure, if anyone has anything to say about it, don't be shy!

And finally, last but CERTAINLY not least, we have the Big Kahuna: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. I always have difficulty describing it but I'll try my best.

So imagine you're sitting front row in an IMAX movie (one of those movies with the GIANT screens in front of you), but the screen is more spherical so it curves around your seat. That's essentially what it feels like to be on this ride...except oh wait, THE SEATS MOVE. You're basically flying down this path where you encounter spiders and the Whomping Willow and all sorts of things, and then you make pit stops where you're chair stops moving (or stops flying, rather, since your chair is still bumping around) in front of a screen and you're watching Harry fly after Malfoy on his broom or something. I'm describing it terribly, but I gotta say, it's awesome. I waited in a long ass line twice in like three hours to go on it. WORTH IT.

So I hate to stop right now (I'm really on a roll), but my eyes are about to fall out of their sockets. So I bid you adieu with a quick park tour video and of course a quote.

If that didn't work because technology hates me, here's the link :)

In its arguably most transformative and revelatory capacity, it is the power to that enables us to empathize with humans whose experiences we have never shared. "

Shameless Plug for Readers

If you somehow just happened upon this blog, before you move on, WAIT JUST ONE SECOND!

What you need to know about me is not my name nor my age or anything like that. What I'd love you to know about me is that I love Harry Potter....and I love talking to people about Harry Potter. What better way to do that than write a blog?

Now, if you're (once again) thinking that this isn't for you and that you'd rather be watching YouTube (The Phoenix Song has an account, by the way...he-hem) just hold on. Because you don't have to be obsessed with Harry Potter to enjoy this blog. You just have to like discussion, and opinions (and me, but I figure that's a given).

I cover a huge variety of things here, and while it doesn't look like much (yet!) I can assure you that with interaction and viewer/reader help, it can really turn into something extraordinary. So even if you have no interest in reading this and in what I have to say or in Harry Potter at all, think of people that you know that might want to take a look at what's going on here. Maybe tempt them with the fact that my next post will be describing and reviewing the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida? Or that my favorite three characters are Sirius Black, Dumbledore and Snape? Or that I am shameless and desperate in terms of asking for readers?

So have a little heart, do what you can to help get The Phoenix Song off the ground. It's also on Twitter, just search The Phoenix Song and you'll find it. I hope to see you back again soon!

I love you all! And thank you!

Favorite Characters Discussions: Sirius Black Part 1

Hello to those who love Harry Potter just as much as I do :)

I have not posted in a very very very long time, as I have just gotten back to school and am trying to get back into the swing of college life. But enough of that nonsense talk. The point of this is to talk about the best characters in the series. Just a disclaimer, full spoilers follow.

So let's start with my favorite favorite character which is......(drumroll please)....SIRIUS BLACK!! Hooray! Now, there may be some of you who are confused and who may disagree on why I love this man so much, so allow me to elaborate.

It is unfortunate that we have Sirius Black for such a short amount of time, but from the moment he is introduced, even as a villain, in Prisoner of Azkaban, he is such a fascination. A mass murderer escaped from Azkaban? No one has ever done that before!!! See? Instant badass points. Right there.

And then as you all know, he is mostly referenced throughout the rest of the book, until we get to my favorite chapter which takes place in the Shrieking Shack. Yes, we all know the part I am referring to: It begins with chapter 17, "Cat, Rat and Dog" and continues to "The Servant of Lord Voldemort", and that, my friends, is where all the juicy secrets come spilling out.

For this is where we find out that Sirius never really betrayed James and Lily! That he was brave and loyal and a wonderfully faithful friend. His guilt at convincing the Potters to change their Secret-Keeper to Pettigrew was heartbreaking, and even when I reread it I find myself wanting to cry in sympathy for him. He endured twelve years in Azkaban, with only the fact that he was innocent to keep him sane, and his determination to avenge his best friend's death keeping him motivated. You couldn't help but fall in love with him at this point.

And don't even get me started on the Hogwarts Express ride home, where Sirius sends his godson Harry (and Ron too) a wonderful and adorably thoughtful present. Here we are first introduced to another owl, Pigwidgeon (Pig for short) which was given to Ron to replace the disgusting and just bleeecchhh Scabbers, and then the note, the wonderful note! Not only did Sirius give Harry a damn FIREBOLT, the best racing broom in the world, he was sweet enough to give written permission for Harry to go to Hogsmeade!!! What makes me so warm and fuzzy inside is that after all he had been through, he still remembered and acted upon the fact that Harry was not able to go to Hogsmeade, and he helped him out. That's what family is for. Even family that you had been away from for twelve years.

Now since I love Sirius Black SO MUCH I have much more to say about him (after all, we only covered the third book here, and we barely scratched the surface), but I feel that this post has gotten long enough. So I've decided to turn this into another series. This will be a series titled "Favorite Character Discussions" (maybe I'll change that, who really knows with me), so don't worry, Sirius Black lovers!! There will be plenty more to come!

Other characters that deserve to be discussed: Dumbledore, Snape, Harry, and more!! I'm also going to do villains, which of course will include Lord Voldemort himself (Tom Riddle if you're really daring :P ), Bellatrix Lestrange, Lucius Malfoy (some debate as to whether or not we can completely call him a villain will take place, same goes for Draco Malfoy) and maybe some Umbridge (because I just love to hate her).

But if you have any more characters or ideas, please please PLEASE leave a comment or email me at PhoenixSong7@gmail.com!! I check it too often to be socially acceptable! And I always respond :)

I feel that it is more than fitting than to leave you with this:

"Dear Harry,
I hope this finds you before you reach your aunt and uncle. I don't know whether they're used to owl post.
Buckbeak and I are in hiding. I won't tell you where, in case this owl falls into the wrong hands. I have some doubt about his reliability, but he is the best I could find, and he did seem eager for the job.
I believe the Dementors are still searching for me, but they haven't a hope of finding me here. I am planning to allow some Muggles to glimpse me soon, a long way from Hogwarts, so that the security on the castle will be lifted.

There is something I never got around to telling you during our brief meeting. It was I who sent you the Firebolt -- Crookshanks took the order to the Owl Office for me. I used your name but told them to take the gold from my own Gringotts vault. Please consider it as thirteen birthdays' worth of presents from your godfather.

I would also like to apologize for the fright I think I gave you that night last year when you left your uncle's house. I had only hoped to get a glimpse of you before starting my journey north, but I think the sight of me alarmed you.

I am enclosing something else for you, which I think will make your next year at Hogwarts more enjoyable.
If ever you need me, send word. Your owl will find me.
I'll write again soon.

Sirius"

and....

"I, Sirius Black, Harry Potter's godfather, hereby give him permission to visit Hogsmeade on weekends."

and finally

"I thought your friend Ron might like to keep this owl, as it's my fault he no longer has a rat."

Love!
